Mulching: do you know what that means? We're happy to explain! In this blog post, we'll explain the pros and cons of mulching, the best time to mulch, how thick the layer should be, and the best tools to use. This way, your garden will be ready for every season!
What is mulching?
Mulching refers to covering the soil with organic material. Mulching is often associated with mowing grass, which can be left on the lawn because it is finely chopped by the lawnmower blade. However, a mulch layer can also consist of garden debris such as shredded leaves, compost, wood chips, or tree bark. These mulch layers are often found in flowerbeds, planters, and walkways.
Organic materials as food for the soil
Garden waste is organic material and packed with valuable nutrients. Mulching releases these nutrients back into the soil, protecting your garden from cold and heat. And an added benefit: you'll have fewer full bins for grass and garden clippings.
When is the best time to mulch?
Mulching grass can be done year-round, but to prevent soil suffocation it is important to scarify it regularly.
Mulching the soil around plants is best done once in the fall and once in the spring. Always do this on moist soil. In winter, mulching protects against the cold by preventing frost from penetrating the soil. And during heavy rain showers, mulching prevents the soil from compacting. In summer, a layer of mulch protects against drying out during warm, sunny spells. The mulch layer ensures that moisture is drawn off more slowly. This also means your garden needs less water. It's a great way to reduce water consumption in the Netherlands.
The benefits of mulching:
- It protects the soil from drying out during sunny periods in summer.
- It protects the soil against cold and frost in winter.
- Less water waste – moisture is better retained in the soil.
- Less trouble with weeds and moss growth.
- No more full bins with grass and garden scraps.
The disadvantages of mulching:
- Large amounts of mulch material can smother the lawn.
- The maximum grass length allowed is 2.5 to 4 cm. This is fine enough for rapid composting.
- The shredded garden waste can spread more quickly in your garden.
How thick should the mulch layer be?
In general, the finer the mulch, the thinner the layer. If you're using grass, we recommend a maximum thickness of 5 centimeters for thin layers. Try to avoid making the mulch layer too thick, as this can lead to mold growth.
How does mulching work with a mulching mower?
A mulching mower cuts the grass and then shreds it into fine particles. These particles are evenly pressed into the lawn by the airflow. The remaining clippings are packed with nutrients. An added benefit is that overflowing compost bins with grass and garden clippings are a thing of the past. Mow the lawn when it's not too wet.
Tip: Don't let the grass grow too long, otherwise the mulch layer will become too thick and may rot. Too late to mow? Then bag the grass clippings first or rake them into smaller areas.
Handy machines for mulching
Which machines can you use for mulching? The tips below will help you get started with mulching effectively and continue to enjoy your lawn to the fullest.

Mulching mowers are designed to cut grass short and fine. Think of them as a lawn mower with a mulching function. This spreads the grass clippings directly onto the lawn to nourish it. This means less fertilizer, less garden waste, and the rake can stay in the shed. The following Stihl mulching mowers are useful:

A standard mulch option is not necessary, because various Stihl mowers can be equipped with a mulch kit, such as this one , can still be provided with a mulch function.
