Uw heg snoeien? Ons advies!

Pruning a hedge may seem like a simple task, but with the right advice and equipment, you'll save time and achieve a neat result. Whether it's a tall yew hedge or a graceful boxwood, each type of hedge requires specific attention and tools. In this blog post, we share helpful tips and advice on pruning a hedge correctly, using the right tools, and how to ensure your garden looks neat again.

What is the right time to prune a hedge?

September is a good time to prune a hedge. This applies to both those that are losing their leaves and those that remain green throughout the year. Common hedge species include yew, boxwood, and beech. An exception is holly or conifer, as these are best pruned before September.

The right equipment and preparation

Are you going with your hedge trimmer or pruning shears Getting started? Make sure you're well prepared, so the job gets done quickly. Good tools are half the battle!

Make sure you have sharp pruning or hedge shears
There's nothing more annoying than dull scissors. They don't improve the final result and can also make the job take a lot longer.

Make sure you have a full battery or tank
Make sure the hedge trimmer's fuel tank is full or the battery is charged before you start pruning. This way, you can prune without unwanted interruptions.

The right tools for your pruning job

Gardening requires the right tools. This is essential for optimal results and enjoyable work.

Are you going to prune a high hedge?
A pole pruner or a pole hedge trimmer is extremely useful for a high hedge, allowing you to really 'make progress' and prune straight. The pole hedge trimmers are suitable for both battery , petrol or electric to get powered up.

Pruning a low hedge?
For a shorter hedge, a compact hedge trimmer is a good choice. These are very handy and lightweight, and are also available in battery , petrol , or electric power.

Pruning boxwood?
For fine pruning of a boxwood or ornamental hedge, boxwood shears or small pruning shears are useful.  Stihl HSA 26  is such a pair of scissors to use for small corners and the perfect shape!

A neat hedge as the end result!

The desired result of your pruning project is, of course, a beautiful, neat hedge. This depends entirely on the correct pruning method. Start at the bottom and work evenly upward. This way, the pruning waste always falls downward, resulting in the neatest result. Trim the top of the hedge with the blade horizontal. Trim this to the same width as the previous pruning, so the hedge always remains the same width and doesn't overshoot at the top.

Easy cleaning up of pruning waste

When pruning the hedge, a lot of green waste naturally falls on the ground. Want to collect it easily? Then make sure you have a leaf rake or leaf blower and Have a garden waste bag or wheelbarrow handy. This way, you can collect your pruning waste in no time. Tidy up, nice!

Tip: Place a tarp or plastic sheet on the ground beneath the hedge you're pruning. After pruning, you can gather up the tarp and quickly remove the debris without raking or blowing.

Do you want to keep the pruning waste as small as possible in the container or on the compost heap? Then use a chopper for the processing of branches and leaves.

Clean the hedge trimmer after the job

Wow, that's great...the hedge is neat again and the pruning waste is cleared away. Don't forget to properly maintain your hedge trimmer afterward, so it's always ready for the next job. It's recommended to use a resin solvent, such as Stihl Superclean , after each job. This will keep resin residue away and the blades lubricated.
