When using STIHL gasoline-powered garden tools, it's important to use the correct fuel. The well-known saying "haste makes waste" certainly applies here, as incorrect fuel usage can quickly cause problems. Not all fuels are created equal. So make sure you're well-informed before filling up and starting your STIHL tool.
STIHL garden machines that require a fuel and oil mixture
STIHL offers two different engine types that require a 50:1 fuel-oil mixture. These are 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines. The higher-revving 2-stroke engines are primarily used in our range of gasoline-powered hand tools, such as gasoline chainsaws , gasoline hedge trimmers , gasoline leaf blowers , gasoline grass trimmers , and gasoline tillers . The low-revving 4-stroke engines are found in professional gasoline combi engines , gasoline brushcutters , and gasoline pole saws .
STIHL engines that use pure fuel
Machines that run on pure fuel use 4-stroke engine technology, similar to that of a car engine. These 4-stroke engines are standard in gasoline lawn mowers , riding mowers , and wood chippers . These tools don't require a mixture of fuels; you can pour the fuel directly into the tank. They have a separate oil supply for lubrication, so adding oil to the fuel isn't necessary. An annual oil change is required for tools with 4-stroke engines.
Always consult the STIHL website, catalog, or your garden tool manual if you are unsure about your engine type.
How long does fuel last?
Fuel deteriorates surprisingly quickly. We understand that certain tools are not used at different times of the year, and you might be tempted to use leftover fuel. However, we strongly recommend using fresh fuel in your gasoline-powered tools. One of the biggest causes of starting or running problems with gasoline-powered tools is stale fuel and a dirty carburetor.
Therefore, use fuel that is less than a month old and don't leave it in the tank longer than necessary. With E10 fuel, fuel segregation can occur, where moisture from the air combines with ethanol and settles at the bottom of the container. Shaking the container or using tools won't solve this problem.
Emptying the fuel tank of petrol tools
If you plan to store a tool for more than a month, it's a good idea to empty the tank and run the machine until it stops. Standard fuels from gas stations contain additives that can complicate the fuel system and make it difficult to start or run the machine. Once the tool has cooled down, we recommend emptying the tank and replacing the fuel cap, then starting the tool repeatedly until the engine stops.
STIHL fuels
STIHL MotoMix is designed for 2-MIX and 4-MIX engines requiring a 50:1 fuel/oil mixture, and Moto4Plus is designed for 4-stroke engines. These STIHL fuels are better for your health, the environment, and your tools, as they contain fewer harmful additives and burn cleaner.
