Is your hedge trimmed ? Our advice!

What's the right time?

September is a good time to prune your hedge. This applies to both the hedge that loses its leaves and the hedge that remains green all the time. Among other things, the yew, boxwood and beech are commonly used hedge types.

An exception is the holly or conifer, because it is better to have these pruned before September.

The right equipment and preparation

Are you going with your hedge trimmer or secateurs to work? Make sure you are well prepared so that the work is done in no time. Good tools are half the battle!

1.) Get a sharp pruning or hedge trimmer

There is nothing more annoying than a dull pair of scissors. The end result will not be better and the work may also take a lot longer.

2.) Have a full battery or tank

Make sure your hedge trimmer's fuel tank is topped up or the battery is charged before you start your trimming job. This way you can prune without unwanted interruptions.

3.) The right tool for your pruning job

Know what you are going to prune! A job in the garden requires the right tools, which is important for optimal results and pleasant work.

Trimming a high hedge?

A pole pruner or pole hedge trimmer is extremely useful with a high hedge, so you can really 'make progress' and cut straight. The hedge trimmers on handle are both on battery , petrol or electric get powered.

Trimming a low hedge?

A compact hedge trimmer is a good choice for a lower hedge. These are very handy and lightweight as well battery , petrol or electric powered available.

Pruning boxwood?

For the fine pruning of your boxwood or ornamental hedge, boxwood shears or small pruning shears come in handy. The Stihl HSA 26 is such a pair of scissors to use for the small corners and a perfect shape!

4.) A tight hedge as the end result!

A nice tight hedge is the desired end result of your pruning job. This stands or falls with a correct way of pruning. Start at the bottom and work your way up evenly. In this way, the pruning waste always falls down and you get a tight result.

Trim the top of your hedge with the blade horizontal. Trim this to the same extent as the previous cut, so that your hedge is always the same width and does not shoot out at the top.

5.) Easy cleaning up of the pruning waste.

When trimming your hedge, of course, a lot of green waste falls on the ground. Do you want to collect this easily? Make sure you use a leaf rake or blower have a garden waste bag or wheelbarrow at hand. This way you can collect and tidy up the pruning waste in no time. Tidy is tidy!

Tip: Place a tarp or plastic on the ground where you need to prune. After pruning you pack this together and it is cleaned up without raking or blowing. Do you want the pruning waste as small as possible in your container or on the compost heap? Then use one shredder for processing branches and leaves.

6.) Clean the hedge trimmer after the job.

So, how nice....the hedge is tight again and the pruning waste has been cleaned up. Don't forget to maintain your hedge trimmer so that it is always ready for the next job. It is recommended that you use resin solvent ( Stihl Superclean ) after every job. This keeps resin residue away and the blades lubricated.
